I’m pretty much in love with the man who owns Wolfies of Hove fish and chip shop on Goldstone Villas. Never before have I encountered someone with such enthusiasm for fish and chips.
While I was waiting for my gluten free battered cod, served with chips made from fresh, locally sourced potatoes and fresh mushy peas, the owner told me all about his family, who help him run the shop, where he buys his ingredients and how much time and effort his son put into making the perfect gluten free batter. I left excited to try the goods and in excellent spirits – I love a foodie, me.
It was delicious. Many gluten free alternatives are heavier, more stodgy and lack the flavour of their gluten rich compadres. It was clear that this was a tried and tested batter – it was light, tasty and a beautiful golden brown. Serious amounts of yum.
Quality is Wolfies of Hove’s focus, with hand peeled scampi from Whitby, sausages made from the belly meat of free range pigs, handmade pies from Goddard’s in Kent and corn fed chickens from Uckfield. Truly, I can’t think of another takeaway quite like it.
In the mecca of fish and chips, it is a rare treat to find somewhere that sells gluten free alternatives (they even have their own gluten free dedicated fryer) and for this reason, paired with the fact that the result is delicious, I would say Wolfies of Hove is definitely worth the trek to Brighton’s ‘classy’ little sister.
